Frequently asked questions about hypnotherapy.

If you have any questions not addressed here, please call or email us, we’re always happy to help 🙂

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a form of guided meditation and whereby the client is gently induced into a trance like state.  It is during this trance like state that the Hypnotherapist uses a range of therapeutic techniques to make suggestions to the unconscious mind that may then induce change to the client’s thoughts, behaviors and feelings.

Does the hypnotist have complete control?

The answer is no. During a hypnotic trance state you are still conscious and aware of your surroundings and what is being said to you. You’re very much able to make your own decisions whilst in therapy.   You can stop a session at any time.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

In many cases yes, almost everyone has the ability to be hypnotised to some degree, however there are some exceptions where hypnotherapy is not recommended, these include; very young children and those people with severe intellectual disabilities where verbal comprehension is difficult.

Can I get stuck in a trance?

No.  You cannot get stuck in a trance.  You are able to end a trance at any time you choose.

Can I be made to do things I don't want to?

No.  You are fully aware of everything that is being said and you are in control at all times.

What can hypnosis help with?

Hypnotherapy can assist in treating many unwanted behaviours or habits such as smoking, diet, anxiety, pain, stress, depression and more.

Will hypnosis put me to sleep?

No.  With hypnosis you are still conscious and therefore not asleep.  Although at times it can be very a relaxing state and if really tired you may fall asleep although this is uncommon.

Is it an easy and quick fix?

This really depends purely on the concern as well as willingness to change. The psychological issues that can be addressed with hypnotherapy tend to require 6 or more sessions to make a difference, the same with psychological therapies. In terms of smoking or over eating, differences have been found after one session, but can taper off if treatment has discontinued. Studies looking into the effect of 1 session to target smoking, found that most of the clients that managed to cut down after the first week had managed to quit smoking two years after the session.

How long does a session last?

Generally a session will last approximately 60 minutes

Is hypnosis covered by medicare?

Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover hypnotherapy.
